At SPS, the trade fair for automation, which took place from 14-16 November 2023 in Nuremberg, halstrup-walcher GmbH was one of over 1300 exhibitors this year to present its innovations for customers from the mechanical and plant engineering sector. The central theme for the drive technology specialist from southern Germany: efficient changeover from batch size one.
To this end, the intelligent positioning systems, which automatically adjust the machine axes, were further developed in terms of their functionalities and, with the PSxHub, a completely new technology platform for the modularisation of machines and systems was presented.
With the further development of the PSE3xx positioning systems with IO-Link, the travel range can now be increased by a multiple of the absolute measuring range of 256 revolutions. By automatically setting the position offset within the device during operation, a partially absolute travel range of over 500,000 revolutions can be realised.
The PSD4xx-IO direct drives now include crystal-accurate microstep generation for the stepper motor as standard. As a result, all positioning phases are executed with maximum accuracy as soon as a travel command is issued. The extremely precise execution of the values specified by the user for acceleration, speed and deceleration results in optimum synchronisation in applications where several drives have to move in sync with each other.
The innovative family business also presented a smart hub developed in-house as a new product. The PSxHub can be used to reduce the complexity of machines and systems by supporting the modularisation of components. Up to 16 positioning systems can be controlled by the smart connecting element, and the synchronisation of the connected positioning systems for format adjustment is also monitored and controlled by the hub. The active bus component ensures smooth communication with the controller, and thanks to the single-cable solution with unshielded, standard A-coded cables, the use of the PSxHub is particularly economical.
The drive technology manufacturer also offers standardised model files that contain an image of the PSx 3xx firmware and can be integrated into a digital machine twin. This allows the travel behaviour of the positioning systems to be simulated as early as the development phase.
With these innovations, halstrup-walcher is positioning itself with its customers as a partner with future-proof, modern solutions for efficient format changeover.
